They are the size of a Double Bubble or Bazooka Joe and the comics page is one half of 8.5 x 11 in. To encourage the opening of this novelty (so many people like to keep my work in tact unopened which is understandable but then they are not enjoying the chew) I did not want to glue the sides of the wrapper to keep it closed so the idea of using the rubber band fits in well with the concept.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiG-BEo0RZyEnB43p5IEu3SEnlQmnxX4qz0Dxt9P4FamsptOlOvZF8UECSw1EGnNyY6zefNW0rpAORYr7shKyygf6sqABbEtdpJLupUYZAMEpoaCff1CECq4Kq7LmyyXHwikLFn5uOKGSJAnlBZ4DgE8yR7KgGY7EPgVqMu1PuwgwqCw8jvkvRT5xnU=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiG-BEo0RZyEnB43p5IEu3SEnlQmnxX4qz0Dxt9P4FamsptOlOvZF8UECSw1EGnNyY6zefNW0rpAORYr7shKyygf6sqABbEtdpJLupUYZAMEpoaCff1CECq4Kq7LmyyXHwikLFn5uOKGSJAnlBZ4DgE8yR7KgGY7EPgVqMu1PuwgwqCw8jvkvRT5xnU=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjk7Lhn8JhFNnTqAHUxr5-Q2Jo7nlQSPRRmR0JwkNGDqMsMJhDDackk2Ctcf1Vof6lZcNwEQgPXWiDVCrUMx7kf2JNzvg9UZcJPVPCWwsJGOu6Y3x6NY_WSOPa9qXXxSRy5pK3o1BR-leIJsqBJhw2TanqGQKyhl3HKJj5n4ArgBscIG4CyNMnrpEFe=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjk7Lhn8JhFNnTqAHUxr5-Q2Jo7nlQSPRRmR0JwkNGDqMsMJhDDackk2Ctcf1Vof6lZcNwEQgPXWiDVCrUMx7kf2JNzvg9UZcJPVPCWwsJGOu6Y3x6NY_WSOPa9qXXxSRy5pK3o1BR-leIJsqBJhw2TanqGQKyhl3HKJj5n4ArgBscIG4CyNMnrpEFe=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsSbgLUsfg2kMODjyU6Vn5mIVkmbB0rx9dHrNBX319K4mt-5V841roDYyk42R4XCzvSFVbFYkVagzwXekKH92YDmnJMURsidrijvR86RW4EdAh5vFBmMGYCbwGMLPMkPZi7HJfR2xGl4DKxZ1nPxYq4vm5cDkperJszWiL4FxosbFwWOrz1MXMjnGe=s3024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsSbgLUsfg2kMODjyU6Vn5mIVkmbB0rx9dHrNBX319K4mt-5V841roDYyk42R4XCzvSFVbFYkVagzwXekKH92YDmnJMURsidrijvR86RW4EdAh5vFBmMGYCbwGMLPMkPZi7HJfR2xGl4DKxZ1nPxYq4vm5cDkperJszWiL4FxosbFwWOrz1MXMjnGe=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-46012949944233253522020-09-19T07:11:00.007-07:002020-09-19T08:19:57.242-07:00Time To Blossom, Hershey<p>This package is way overdue for a redesign, or, go back to the old one. It probably changed to this ugly thing when Hershey took over this confection from Lowney. The photo of the chocolate looks awful even though they used the same image as the previous package. It’s a bad colour reproduction. And the yellow colour of the box looks weird too as if it’s a miss-tint of yellow, more on the green side than orange which unfortunately does not show in this photo below.</p><p>I don’t know how the sales are of these things. They must be alright because they are still making them. I love them (even though hey are terribly sweet) and have been eating them for over 40 years. I am really glad they, in this day and age where food stuff packaging is all plastic or foil-sealed, that they have remained wrapped in the old fashioned chocolate bar foil, and are in a box that you don’t have to rip open.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj46CfaoZGlQJN7jRyF5Ab2eV0d1mK8yZnz6U3M1V39KUIwPv3iv6FghQqEOk69hNfVNsweToRJofnYFEEzXERzqHipGy-t-BU1HSkOTBPaxco3aH9s0aNzVodHqUE4nWqvv243Y1sXn4s/s1280/CC274C1E-8395-49B1-8DD4-9621F621E6B7.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1280" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj46CfaoZGlQJN7jRyF5Ab2eV0d1mK8yZnz6U3M1V39KUIwPv3iv6FghQqEOk69hNfVNsweToRJofnYFEEzXERzqHipGy-t-BU1HSkOTBPaxco3aH9s0aNzVodHqUE4nWqvv243Y1sXn4s/w400-h300/CC274C1E-8395-49B1-8DD4-9621F621E6B7.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://youtu.be/xgawtIMv39s">https://youtu.be/xgawtIMv39s</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is a link to a great commercial for Cherry Blossom from the 70’s</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is what it feels like to eat these things!</div>Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-29848637105617132112020-09-12T09:56:00.005-07:002020-09-12T09:58:31.006-07:00The Corner Grocery Store<p> Winnipeg in the North End had a lot of corner grocery stores when I was growing up. Buying candy and chocolate bars to satisfy my sweet tooth was never more than a couple minute walk away.A lot of these stores had large hand painted 7-UP advertising murals on them. Now a lot of these corner stores have disappeared and/or the murals have long ago been painted over. </p><p> I was really missing them lately and I’ve always loved that late 60’s early 70’s graphic art style popularized by Peter Max. I was missing them so much so, that I painted one on the side of my garage.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgantuD3I3dm-pp8LwFE7jku3ME7iBg26OFC_YyxJD10qd74HQ0Jtuar6ZmNlh3JluCYJmgIo17mX4QmlNiINW5ZQzr4iK-krjfJ9PeU9876ZJXQ_HPVyRfkUIA3BBw6ZBqu0I4XQe_Iwc/s2048/13581CCC-86EC-4F1E-A4F1-3F9175131B01.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="375" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgantuD3I3dm-pp8LwFE7jku3ME7iBg26OFC_YyxJD10qd74HQ0Jtuar6ZmNlh3JluCYJmgIo17mX4QmlNiINW5ZQzr4iK-krjfJ9PeU9876ZJXQ_HPVyRfkUIA3BBw6ZBqu0I4XQe_Iwc/w500-h375/13581CCC-86EC-4F1E-A4F1-3F9175131B01.jpeg" width="500" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6pFvOPlr42P1fCkKpf71pIP7ZbRUVbcKEL4L5erS1L0BlkhyU_djjSxio0IewaneGemC1Am9Z-h4f2oRn-Sk9_tgyTMdpz0eMYWRVlMAC5fuB69avYE9ysIUOTWpI8ozuIIFhjQBb1hI/s2048/8A9977A9-2E22-4BD9-A5E6-A57FE88E8ED0.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6pFvOPlr42P1fCkKpf71pIP7ZbRUVbcKEL4L5erS1L0BlkhyU_djjSxio0IewaneGemC1Am9Z-h4f2oRn-Sk9_tgyTMdpz0eMYWRVlMAC5fuB69avYE9ysIUOTWpI8ozuIIFhjQBb1hI/s320/8A9977A9-2E22-4BD9-A5E6-A57FE88E8ED0.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYw6P_O4epMuU1vZ5K3FznQkymQe7b_cB_kz0MZq1M08fsSPSktZoOiUpGVGPrLXKG64W47spt2xAMshbjOwNr5YTLl3yEKgb8C7prjPZShRa-cVgFfAxEFRIgwet2tsKPMSWlnNXTvJo/s2048/DA68E628-87CB-4814-9AF7-59C257C0139E.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYw6P_O4epMuU1vZ5K3FznQkymQe7b_cB_kz0MZq1M08fsSPSktZoOiUpGVGPrLXKG64W47spt2xAMshbjOwNr5YTLl3yEKgb8C7prjPZShRa-cVgFfAxEFRIgwet2tsKPMSWlnNXTvJo/s320/DA68E628-87CB-4814-9AF7-59C257C0139E.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-88739218729672251732020-08-31T12:46:00.002-07:002020-08-31T12:48:24.644-07:00I Could not resist....So Happy!<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXpkWOXaPb259iMuuF1jI5bsePPhAsz14aODz5jWCi1Maq4kxi0NbzNFB1q2A4QUIgwi-cIeq5CgwuLZgr6FT1jICwu3-etihHszaS1oKreS__KSfiEJ8gWfkoi3Xvd9cuMj05OhkBrDE/s2048/BDBE5198-8AE6-41D0-AC34-9F75EE529F18.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXpkWOXaPb259iMuuF1jI5bsePPhAsz14aODz5jWCi1Maq4kxi0NbzNFB1q2A4QUIgwi-cIeq5CgwuLZgr6FT1jICwu3-etihHszaS1oKreS__KSfiEJ8gWfkoi3Xvd9cuMj05OhkBrDE/s640/BDBE5198-8AE6-41D0-AC34-9F75EE529F18.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>After my previous post with my Oh Henry / So Happy design, I could not resist making a full mock-up of the bar. It looks fabulous! Though, I do need to find a smaller ‘pinking shears’ for the zig zag cuts.</p><p>This past Friday I shared my idea with the Hershey Company. I really wish the internet didn’t make it impossible to actually talk to somebody at large companies. They did have a ‘share your ideas with us’ button to click on, which I used to submit my idea, but by doing so, I may have given up all rights to my fantastic idea, by having to agree with their 10 terms, which by the way I don’t agree to. It’s very unfair. I don’t mind or care so much If I don’t get paid ( I have zillions of ideas per minute coming out of my cranium), as long as I get a years’ worth of Oh Henry! bars. And that’s a lot. It might be cheaper to pay me. </p>Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-10562328535821806062020-08-10T11:05:00.002-07:002020-08-10T11:05:13.812-07:00OH! I would be So Happy!<p><br /></p><p>I was sitting at a coffee shop before work and In the corner of my eye I saw the chocolate bar stand and the side of a box of Oh Henry chocolate bars. But I couldn’t believe my eyes as I saw the words SO Happy instead of Oh Henry. Brilliant I thought, what a great idea for them to do that. But when I actually looked, I saw it really ‘only’ said Oh Henry. </p><p>And this got me thinking. It’s a great Idea. Now to sell them on it. (Hershey). Let’s make this happen!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD8D7aAa7zdBwO7dsN5OsDWhioEmG3PIyvrneW8tTc9jVh_JS5fE2VwkfDsW3ri-zvO1TE5_Vi72QR8oE9cIvCAOqwx08nnQiZ_GgGv2vBPrrgFMBy5H6Qfz3I0yEahWEYUn0JY3_zSCg/s1215/10B2C76E-DE53-4B3A-8312-124553C84C65.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="785" data-original-width="1215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD8D7aAa7zdBwO7dsN5OsDWhioEmG3PIyvrneW8tTc9jVh_JS5fE2VwkfDsW3ri-zvO1TE5_Vi72QR8oE9cIvCAOqwx08nnQiZ_GgGv2vBPrrgFMBy5H6Qfz3I0yEahWEYUn0JY3_zSCg/s640/10B2C76E-DE53-4B3A-8312-124553C84C65.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So this is what I came up with by mimicking the current Oh Henry wrapper design.</div><p><br /></p>Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-85050714399986982992020-05-31T14:44:00.000-07:002020-05-31T14:44:08.133-07:00Around the Block..... How does one get from here to there?<br />
<br />
I love it when things smash together like chocolate and peanut butter. I certainly wasn’t looking for this idea but if you give me a few items I’ll find some way to link them together. It’s nice to know that even though Bubblicious gum does not have any comics they can still be inspiring, as well as pretty tasty too.<br />

This to me is the classic Caramilk wrapper. Maybe it's when I started to pay attention in the late 80's.<br />
And the whole advertising campaign they had with the Caramilk secret, even in the seventies and using the Mona Lisa and her smile....all of it quite brilliant. I love how the 'wave' graphic starts to change through the years and also you get to see the Cadbury logo change. As a personal note, I do not like the foil wrappers that are used now as they are so much harder to open without tearing.<br />

In the late eighties Nestle bought Rowntree. I suppose, as a transitional package, Nestle didn't want to put their logo on the front. (The same thing happened with the Kit Kat wrappers.) In the scanned boxes below you will see various changes they made over the years, from their Nestle logo design to even the grams they offered, taking more and more away. Scaries came out a six years ago and they have been offering it every Halloween time since. The bottom one is the most recent as of Fall 2018 and is made up of 3 separate compartments, each with their own opening.<br />

actually 100 grams <br />
Does this not look like a certificate or something like a stock or bond! Or the Golden Ticket from the Willy Wonka factory. The gold print and beautiful script lettering makes it look very regal and the separately stamped product batch number makes it look like it's registered and of course the gold foil wrap which starts to look like a gold bar.<br />
This wrapper is from around 1998, just before the 75th anniversary of Neilson's Jersey Milk in 1999 Though it was being made by Cadbury I am happy that they kept the old Neilson brand on the package and even to this day! After the 75th anniversary wrapper which was very similar to this one, they changed the package to a vertical sealed file wrap using mostly all the same design and coloring.<br />
What I find interesting is that really nobody, except for the graphic designers or printers, would ever have really seen the wrapper displayed in this fashion and it wasn't meant to be. I love it.Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-61904444379586705602017-10-11T10:49:00.000-07:002017-10-11T10:49:00.924-07:00Black Bart's Black Licorice<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A few weeks back I was in Dollarama to buy my favorite chocolate bar and I was a bit confused in making sure that I had the right one because they make a peanut butter version as well. But it wasn't until I was in line to pay that I noticed that it was a completely new wrapper, hence my earlier confusion. I love it when packaging design changes. I was excited.<br />
<br />
When I was on the bus I couldn't wait to pull out my henry to study it. Yeah I felt goofy, just staring at it, turning it around in my hands and of course picking it apart. I wish I could have been there in the final stages to tweak it to a better state. I seem to have some relationship issues between the OH and the Henry. Something is off kilter. I know what it is but I won't get into it. The chocolate bar still tastes Great!Robert Pasternakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03151638200224755811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6470398637616744405.post-82734008350894147792015-03-06T09:32:00.000-08:002015-03-06T09:32:24.495-08:00Roca Poetry Vaisius Chew<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I could not find any peppermint Roca in the city last year for a birthday gift so I had to make my own. And of course I can't make candy for gifting without designing and making my own packaging for it. I like how the single page packaging wrap works for the various shaped pieces, then a single sticker to hold it all closed and tight.<br />

My friend Andrew is a much better poet than I will ever be. You can chew on his word morsels for a long time. They kinda stick to your teeth though.<br />
<br />
This is a little novelty packaging idea I came up with, perfect for a single shot of poetry when you need your next fix. No need to rush through a whole volume. Just chew on this for awhile. Then when you are ready, you can have another. Rot your mind, not your teeth.<br />

Rowntree's chocolate covered wafer bar was first introduced in England in 1935 and was renamed Kit Kat in 1937. In the 1940's Kit Kat was exported and sold in Canada.</div>

From 1945-1947 the original red wrapper was replaced by blue due to the shortage of milk.<br />

It's interesting how certain design elements are are phased in or out. The chocolate bar for example or slight lettering changes. You can also see here the number of grams the bar weighs fluctuating and then it's really super to see the evolution of Nestle's continual logo change.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">1974 art for ScreamSicle - From the book Wacky Packages New New New published in 2010 by Abrams</span> </div>
<br />
I grew up buying Wacky Packages trading card gum stickers and I putting them all over my notebooks and dresser. ( I wish I didn't) but I still love them to this day. There have been hundreds of them made over the years and there has even been a resurgence of interest in them with the Topps company putting out collections and books and new stickers!<br />
<br class="webkit-block-placeholder" />
So, I almost couldn't believe it when I saw Nestle's daringly humorous move to temporarily change their best selling candy bar packaging for a novelty halloween theme. These are real live Wacky Packages!<br />

I must say that the Kit Kat design here is rather lame. The Kat is pretty cool but none of it says Halloween like the other three do. Below are some of the other candy bar related wacky package stickers Topps put out. But like I said there are hundreds of these little designed paintings of all sorts of products. In another post I'll put up some more of my favorites.<br />

<br />
I was remembering the old packages of Lik-m-aid from when I was a kid, you know that colored, flavored sugar powder candy in an envelope pack. There have also been many variations like Pixy Stix and then I remember these plastic fruits with the powder inside, and then there were the packages that had a candy stick in a separate attached pouch so that you didn't have to get your finger all sticky, plus with the stick you got more candy.....more sugar. What those guys didn't do was make the stick into a candy finger. <br />
<br />
I was also thinking about Kool-aid, sugar, artificial colors and the transformative powers of these items on our body and minds, though perhaps only temporary. But what if we take it a step further and rearrange a few deeper physiological and psychological attributes of our human form? Soon we will have the option to choose the body and mind of our children through the manipulation of their DNAs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9bnJyOB1tpgDR4BPEFMIO82J_aeySjR5CZFns8I60MISOJ436KVNHf-BbVur8hyphenhyphenRvP6FW01__50yLm_MHDl7tSVS8kWn4K5bWF9ALU5oNSrm2S11wrQGyEFn_GXcr2PclIQLOfr7TxZw/s1600/D-N-Aid_astronaut_pasternak.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9bnJyOB1tpgDR4BPEFMIO82J_aeySjR5CZFns8I60MISOJ436KVNHf-BbVur8hyphenhyphenRvP6FW01__50yLm_MHDl7tSVS8kWn4K5bWF9ALU5oNSrm2S11wrQGyEFn_GXcr2PclIQLOfr7TxZw/s320/D-N-Aid_astronaut_pasternak.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When I was creating the design and art for my D-N-Aid packages I had a specific era of design in my memory bank. It was vague and I have seen the packages here and there since but I did not want to look at them when it came time to design mine, I just wanted to work from my vague recollections. This way, I would have something similar (hopefully) without copying or I could get something very unique if my memories were totally out the window. I had no memories of what the backs looked liked though so I just made something which was pleasing to me.<br />
<br />
I wanted to do a rainbow of flavors which gave me the fun assignment of drawing different characters for the packages. Yeah there should have been at least one more woman. The doctor was going to be a woman but it just wasn't happening on the drawing board. In fact I actually started this project a year ago. I had the package design all done at that time, and I started drawing one of the charicatures, but It just wasn't the right touch I wanted, so I abandoned the project for the time until this past October, and somehow, all the characters just rolled off my mouse. (yes these are computer aided drawings done in adobe illustrator using the pencil tool and a mouse)<br />

Here are a couple packs of the real stuff that I had when I was a kid as well as the Fun Dip candy that I remembered seeing but was already an adult to want any. Then below that I've included some older era Lik-m-aid package graphics. Enjoy!<br />

The taste left by this very chewy caramel candy made me feel a bit different. I couldn't find any information on the candy company. I don't know if they have been around for awhile, but the wrapper looks somewhat modern, though it could be up to 12-14 years old at the same time. Maybe that's why the candy tasted strange. Or maybe it was just a foreign flavor that I was not used too. Or even just the fact that the candy idea is odd to begin with. Who would have given this candy the production go ahead?<br />

One of my favorite all time graphic designs has got to be the Old Dutch chip bag and box packaging trim you see here. Just the trim - it's simple, bold and effective, and very festive. Old Dutch chips were the potato chip brand in my youth and today they still carry on with the best potato chip on the market. There are only three ingredients in their regular potato chip: potatoes, oil, salt. And this is the bag we are seeing here on this wall on Pacific Avenue here in Winnipeg. I don't know how long or who painted this graphic but I only noticed it this past winter. I went back last week for another photo but there has been some new activity on the wall.<br />

Can you guess what Old Dutch product this top blue 'code" is from? How about the many other potato chip flavors Old Dutch offers. Here are BBQ, Onion & Garlic, Sour Crean & Onion and All Dressed.<br />

This is a very well crafted box and probably sturdier than need be for it's rather smallish size. The inner box also has printing on the sides that mirror what is on the outside box cover and the bottom of the box has a caution label that want the store owner to make sure to take care of their chocolate bars.</div>

Though I suppose you can do this with gum but it would get dangerously sticky. But as it is now with the modeling clay, it's still dangerous because kids will just automatically eat this out of the package if they are not told because it really looks like gum. Not just the package but the clay as well. That's what gave me the idea for this.</div><div><br /></div><div></div><div></div><div> I was at a craft store with a friend and they wanted to see all the clay colors the store had to offer. When I saw the pink clay, a huge slab of bubble gum came to mind. (yeah, candy is always on the brain) "I should do up a package for some fake gum and put the clay in it. (Any excuse to do some graphic design.) But then I thought right away that it would be kind of dumb because what was the point of using something useful for an unuseful purpose? I would be wasting the clay for the sake of creating graphics and packaging for a fake gum. So, how can I turn this into an actual product? I wondered. Well, it already is modeling clay, So let's keep it as modeling clay but as a double bubble portion, to just fiddle with, and chew on with your fingers!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHRYaF6k5ypr-9QqPhHPSA_Eg2fXEcH1d10VzI_Yl7N4EPNkR3wHNJskzulXIaMxz7IYkj7dXH56aavEZ6eD5G8w3QjLg8wFLmkTdYWCFM_Mi5qzg6qE-ZwdFaPwpRtZPZWRtiaDCTKA4/s1600/fun_gum_finger_pasternak.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHRYaF6k5ypr-9QqPhHPSA_Eg2fXEcH1d10VzI_Yl7N4EPNkR3wHNJskzulXIaMxz7IYkj7dXH56aavEZ6eD5G8w3QjLg8wFLmkTdYWCFM_Mi5qzg6qE-ZwdFaPwpRtZPZWRtiaDCTKA4/s400/fun_gum_finger_pasternak.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707642548765839682" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAKcQLpuT6qTOBMYj019tFitdOUBo1MeBTALpqFdpHEmOWRnDkZzHOkzZdzxGaDhbrsuXkY5UqjzaLL6b0na6gSODwuG8Xwqtq94k0EEYogzECC3ouXK3AvXz2LuOD107xvBdyHD4fAzY/s1600/fun_gum_display_pasternak.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 328px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAKcQLpuT6qTOBMYj019tFitdOUBo1MeBTALpqFdpHEmOWRnDkZzHOkzZdzxGaDhbrsuXkY5UqjzaLL6b0na6gSODwuG8Xwqtq94k0EEYogzECC3ouXK3AvXz2LuOD107xvBdyHD4fAzY/s400/fun_gum_display_pasternak.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707642539604706466" /></a><br /></div><div> It was super duper fun coming up with all the different inserts. From the time period of 1976 of the wrapper above (as shown by the Olympic symbol from the Canada Olympic games which were held in Montreal in 1976) and the obvious 1970's design motif of the wrapper below, there was not a lot of time in between these to have had multiple designs. I think its great how the pyramid shaped took on a hill-like appearance and the horizon lines took suit in that 70's vibra-tone. Kinda even looks like a geographic slice of the ground as if there is gooey lava inside. It also mirrors the profile shape of a section of the bar. Also notice the major shift back to Cadbury's older original logo design which they were using in their other chocolate bars. On the back it says that there is absolutely nothing in this package, and there isn't! So often I make stuff with such valuable and choice material inside, but nobody wants to open the package for fear of missing out on its collectable value, like leaving a toy or action figure in the mint package. It also happens to be number 23 of an ongoing series of books that I have called the Acid Man Society.</div><div> At this time I was thinking about different ways of disguising a book and different ways of packaging my art. I was wondering , "where are some unlikely types of packaging where you may find a book inside but at the some time keeping the form of the package in line with a book format". Through previous issues of Acid Man I was already familiar with making tiny books and because the cost of making them had always been an issue, if I was able to make a book with with one 8.5 x 11 in sheet of paper, then all the better. I also wanted to have a book in color which costs even more. I was thinking about gum wrappers ( I have a collection) I was looking at my "breath" doodles (I have a collection) - they were already small and narrow, plus they had the added hint of freshening your visual breath. Oh wow, a Visual Chew! </div><div><br /></div><div> <br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCME3XwY2BVBrq5A7EGcck-RehCWGVwIEP-tFaJJ7gItBWEZLgSSPHhqJAeYp5y36v7-cqvEKwVJfYvP9k2t3GHRXOSFkrj1BhSgOIXaGHx862bOBWIi1bsipX9fx7LtMzCb615TX3zXU/s1600/Spiracle+gum_sm.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCME3XwY2BVBrq5A7EGcck-RehCWGVwIEP-tFaJJ7gItBWEZLgSSPHhqJAeYp5y36v7-cqvEKwVJfYvP9k2t3GHRXOSFkrj1BhSgOIXaGHx862bOBWIi1bsipX9fx7LtMzCb615TX3zXU/s400/Spiracle+gum_sm.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686488402653118034" /></a><br /></div><div> These are the size of an actual stick of gum and to top it all off there is a white powder that gets all over you! Just like the real stuff. On the edge of the wrapper is says: Keep foil wrapper to ensure collectable value. I really wanted people to open them up, not expecting them to put it all back together over and over again after showing people, but to keep all the components safe and sound and then at one point it can be reassembled carefully for it's collectable value. I've given some to people not even knowing there is a book inside and they just save them, thinking its just an old stick of gum. But I have that in another product of mine. Even though it is possible to make real lollipops, they just don't last. Sure they are yummy for a while, but these little sculptural novelties will never go sour.</div><div> The image way at top is how they ended up for my Visual Chew show in 2010. I made a batch of 17 acrylic pops on wood. The wrappers are silk screened with a cut out plastic window and the boxes were silk screened as well. The blue images above is one of a set 3 of the first prototypes that I made.</div><div> On the back of those wrappers I had a little bio I wrote of Jackson Pollock. I thought that not everyone would know who he is and hence not totally get the concept and slight play on the name. He is one of my favorite artists and this is what I wrote: Jackson Pollock(1912-1956) He was an American expressionist painter who had a controlled and systematic method to his dribbling and splattering of paint onto huge canvases laid on the floor. These paintings broke the mold of representational art and in his use of new techniques, demonstrated the artist's physical involvement with the work.</div><div> For the silk screened wrappers I had to forgo the write up thinking that the type would be pretty tiny and I was unsure of my silk screening skills. ( Yes I printed these!)</div><div> </div><div> Below are some of the wrapper design ideas I was toying with after those prototypes and after I decided that I wanted to silk screen them. I loved the plastic window and opening the little perforated door to let out a chiclet at a time. In my novelty end of producing art and looking at packages, this idea came came to me and seemed so rediculous I had to figure out a way to make it work.</div><div> I realized that I could get 26 - 16 page books from one sheet of 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. As always if I can print from my printer I usually will and this is my maximum size. My friend Ron White liked the idea and hopped on board to make up some books. It took us a few years to design all the 26 books. The registration is so tight for aligning the front and back side of the sheet that my printer or Xeroxing was not working. So we went to a 4-color offset press. Then there was the whole procedure of getting all these little suckers bound together in their candy covered shell - really just clay coat card stock- but it mimics the the candy coated gum and shell perfectly.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZ4WKhZx28iMrNv5pX2p6xwZGX1sqoEOIsPXEHaXkEQrTxQw3Yhl9BzMwSnDgAf4wNJpaL0UuFr3Pi5zKXRb5KlidqYm1d99aJBmm4nQuuGBdvay0UfuNlMBmDM-bi4I2UAHxKZ4r-_M/s1600/Booklets_spilled_white_pasternak.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZ4WKhZx28iMrNv5pX2p6xwZGX1sqoEOIsPXEHaXkEQrTxQw3Yhl9BzMwSnDgAf4wNJpaL0UuFr3Pi5zKXRb5KlidqYm1d99aJBmm4nQuuGBdvay0UfuNlMBmDM-bi4I2UAHxKZ4r-_M/s400/Booklets_spilled_white_pasternak.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681257890802669890" /></a><br /></div><div> As to the matter of the box as shown above, at first I tried to just have color xerox cpies on heavy stock. I didn't like the shade of yellow really, but then also having to hand cut over 100 boxes and score the fold lines, was going to be <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">stupid</span>. I did 10 this way and then thought no way. So we got the boxes printed as well with 3 spot colors and I designed a die to get them punched out. Ahhh, nice. There is an image of the box flat below. The image above is from one of the first 10 made the hard way.
